QuietText FAQ
Straight answers, including the ones about what QuietText does not do.
What is QuietText?
QuietText is a private text-spam filter for iPhone. It checks SMS, MMS and RCS texts from unknown senders against rules you can read and change, and sorts them into Junk, Promotions or Transactions in Messages. It does not delete texts. It needs iOS 17 or later and costs $2.99 once.
Does it filter iMessage?
No. QuietText only handles SMS, MMS and RCS texts from unknown senders. iMessage conversations never go through it, because iOS does not send them to text-filter apps.
Does it filter texts from my contacts or people I have replied to?
No. Texts from people in your Contacts, and from people you have replied to, are treated as known senders and are never passed to QuietText. Only unknown senders are checked.
Does it read my texts?
It runs on your phone. When a text arrives from an unknown sender, iOS hands it to the QuietText filter on your iPhone, which checks it against your rules and answers with a folder. QuietText does not use the optional network lookup Apple offers to filter apps, so there is no server, no account and no analytics. It does not keep a copy of your real texts. The App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.
Why are some spam texts still getting through?
A few common reasons. The text may be an iMessage, or from someone in your Contacts or someone you have replied to; QuietText never sees those. No rule may match, in which case QuietText gives no opinion and iOS leaves the text where it is. Another filter app may be selected, since only one can be active. Or the filter may not be switched on in Settings yet. To fix a miss, paste the text into the Test tab, see what QuietText says, and add a word or switch on a rule group on the Rules tab.
Can it block calls?
No. Version 1 is texts only. QuietText cannot block calls and cannot block a phone number. It sorts the texts from unknown senders into folders in Messages.
How much does it cost?
$2.99, paid once. There is no subscription, no free trial that turns into a charge, and no in-app purchase. Everything in the app is included.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com or through your Apple Account purchase history. If something is not working, email us first and we will try to fix it.
How do I turn it on?
iOS requires you to switch a text filter on yourself. On iOS 17, go to Settings > Messages > Unknown & Spam, turn on Filter Unknown Senders, tap SMS Filtering and choose QuietText. On iOS 18, the path is Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown & Spam, then the same steps. On iOS 26, open Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter and choose QuietText. The Home tab in the app shows the steps for your iOS version.
Can I change what it filters?
Yes. Every rule is listed in plain words on the Rules tab. You can switch rule groups on and off, add your own words and phrases, and keep allow and block lists. The Test tab lets you paste a text and see the verdict before you rely on a change. The Log tab lists only the checks you run in the Test tab. The filter itself keeps no record of your real texts.
Does it need an internet connection or an account?
No. QuietText works fully offline and has no account to create. Your rules are stored on your iPhone. The app itself makes no network requests.
Can I use it with another spam filter app?
Only one text-filter app can be active at a time. That is an iOS rule, not ours. Pick QuietText in the settings path for your iOS version and it replaces the other filter. You can switch back at any time.
